He Is Someone Who Gives Spiritual Life
Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”-John 3:5-6 (NKJV)
Two realms exist in God’s creation. There is the natural realm, and then there’s the supernatural realm. The natural is what we observe all around us. It’s the measurable mass and material that we constantly interact with. The food we eat, the car we drive, the rain we dodge-they’re all part of the natural realm. Then there’s the other realm, the supernatural realm, which we’re given glimpses of in the Scriptures. It’s a place where the laws of nature don’t apply, where there’s conflict between good and evil over our lives, and where God dwells.
Just as there are two realms of existence, there are also two births. Jesus made mention of this as He explained God’s truth to Nicodemus. He shared that there’s a natural birthing process that produces flesh. All of us experience this as we’re born into the natural world in which we live. But then He shared that there’s another birthing process that is supernatural, one that doesn’t produce flesh, but spiritual life. This supernatural birth is necessary in order to apprehend the supernatural realm that exists yet elude natural detection.
Notice how Jesus described this supernatural birth. He referred to it is as being “born of the Spirit.” This shows us that the Holy Spirit is the active agent in this birthing process. He’s the One who makes us spiritually attuned to supernatural realities. First Corinthians 2:10-12 says that God reveals these things to us through His Spirit, who searches out the depths of God’s ways and deposits them into our hearts.
Apart from the Holy Spirit, it’s impossible to understand or discern supernatural things. But when we experience the birth that He brings, we receive spiritual life, and He becomes our link between the natural world that we live in and the supernatural world beyond.
