He Is Someone Who Is Always in Us
“For He dwells with you and will be in you.”-John 14:17 (NKJV)
After Jesus told the disciples that the Holy Spirit had been dwelling with them, He went on to share that the Spirit would eventually be in them. The same holds true for us. First the Holy Spirit comes alongside us, leading us to repentance and salvation in Christ. But when we respond to the Spirit’s working with us, He then comes in us:
In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, . . . (Ephesians 1:13 NKJV)
Understand that this isn’t optional. The Spirit comes into each and every person who places their faith in Jesus Christ and His work on the cross. The Bible even goes so far as to say that those who don’t have the Holy Spirit in them don’t belong to Christ:
But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. (Romans 8:9 NKJV)
If you’re a Christian, at this very moment you have the Holy Spirit of God inside of you! Everywhere you go, everything you do, He is right there because He is in you. Even more amazing, the original word here for in means “to settle down and take permanent residence.” So when the Holy Spirit comes inside of us, He’s there to stay . . . forever.
This can affect our hearts in one of two ways. It can bother us if we’ve allowed our walk with God to slip, or it can bless us if we’ve been running the race of faith with endurance. Either way, the Holy Spirit is in us to stay. Let’s be sure to live in a way that allows for His presence in us to be a blessing to us, to others, and to Him.
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. (Ephesians 4:30 NKJV)
